Amanda Seyfried Imagines Sophie’s Next Chapter: Motherhood and Musical Magic in Potential Mamma Mia 3

Amanda Seyfried is keeping the dream of a third Mamma Mia! film alive — and she has a clear vision for her character, Sophie, if the follow-up ever comes to fruition. Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at the Los Angeles premiere of The Testament of Ann Lee on December 14, Seyfried shared her thoughts on where Sophie’s life could go in a potential Mamma Mia 3.
“Oh, with kids. I mean, I love being a mother,” Seyfried, 40, said. “I love playing a mother, and I would love to dive into the curiosities of motherhood and raising children on a Greek island — just like Donna did with Sophie.”
Seyfried, who plays Sophie, daughter of Meryl Streep’s Donna in the 2008 original Mamma Mia! musical romantic comedy, envisions the storyline exploring the joys and challenges of parenthood while maintaining the signature charm of the franchise.
“I think that would be really interesting. I have no idea where the story is going to go, but I know there’s going to be a lot of singing and dancing,” she added.
The actress is passionate about bringing the film to life, stating, “I’m going to keep campaigning for that movie until I’m blue in the face.” Her enthusiasm reflects not only her love for the character but also the timeless appeal of the musical series.
According to producer Judy Craymer, a script for Mamma Mia 3 — a follow-up to 2018’s prequel-sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again — has been completed, and the film remains in development. Craymer hinted at potential cast additions, including pop star Sabrina Carpenter, joining returning favorites Seyfried and Streep, 76.
