Jennifer Lawrence on the Golden Globes Joke That Made Her “Proud to Be a Woman”

The Oscar-winning actress reflects on Amy Poehler and Tina Fey’s razor-sharp humor, her love for iconic comedies, and her dream reality TV escape

Jennifer Lawrence has never been shy about celebrating the women who make her laugh, and in a recent conversation with Amy Poehler, the Oscar-winning actress revealed a standout awards-show moment that still makes her beam with pride.

Appearing on Poehler’s Good Hang podcast, Lawrence—who stars in the upcoming Die My Love—opened up about how often Poehler and Tina Fey pop up in her life, both on screen and, apparently, in her algorithm. “You’re on my algorithm a lot,” Lawrence told Poehler. “You and Tina, you guys hosted a Golden Globes that I was at, and you were the funniest people I’ve ever seen in my life. You made me proud to be a woman.”

Poehler, clearly delighted, pressed for details, recalling that she and Fey co-hosted the Golden Globe Awards multiple times—in 2013, 2014, 2015, and again in 2021. She quickly zeroed in on a specific joke, asking, “Was that when we said that American Hustle, the original title was Explosion at the Wig Factory?”

Lawrence didn’t hesitate. That was exactly the moment.

The joke landed especially close to home for Lawrence, who starred in David O. Russell’s American Hustle, the 2013 film set in the 1970s that followed a group of con artists forced by an FBI agent into a high-stakes sting operation. The film also starred Christian Bale, Amy Adams, and Jeremy Renner, and earned Lawrence an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She ultimately lost the Oscar to Lupita Nyong’o for her powerful performance in 12 Years a Slave.

Already an Oscar winner by that point—having taken home Best Actress for Silver Linings Playbook in 2012—and globally known for leading The Hunger Games franchise, Lawrence has long been vocal about her appreciation for smart, female-driven comedy. During the podcast, she also praised HBO’s Veep, in which Julia Louis-Dreyfus delivered a blisteringly funny portrayal of politician Selina Meyer from 2012 to 2019.

Her comedy comfort viewing doesn’t stop there. Lawrence revealed her love for Modern Family, the long-running ABC sitcom that aired from 2009 to 2020 and followed the lives of the ever-evolving Pritchett clan.

Poehler also took the opportunity to tap into another well-known Lawrence passion: reality television. When asked which unscripted show she would most like to appear on, Lawrence answered without missing a beat. “Well, I mean, I want to be on all of them,” she said, before narrowing it down. “I guess The Kardashians, cause then I’d be on a private plane going to, like, Fiji.”

The conversation was a warm, witty exchange between two women who clearly admire each other—and a reminder of how a perfectly timed joke, delivered by the right voices, can leave a lasting impression. For Lawrence, that Golden Globes moment wasn’t just funny; it was empowering, unforgettable, and a celebration of women owning the stage with humor and confidence.
