The actress-turned-director reflects on the legacy of the original films and imagines a bold, love-filled reimagining of the vampire saga that launched her career.
Kristen Stewart may be ready to return to the world that defined a generation—this time from behind the camera. While walking the red carpet at the Palm Springs International Film Festival Creative Impact Awards, the actress and filmmaker revealed that if she could remake any project as a director, it would be the very first Twilight film.
“Hold on tight, spider monkey,” Stewart seemed to suggest—at least in spirit—as she openly embraced the idea of revisiting Stephenie Meyer’s iconic vampire romance with a fresh creative lens.
“I would love—look. I love what Catherine [Hardwicke] did, I love what Chris [Weitz] did, I love what all of the directors did with the movies,” Stewart said. “They were so themselves and weird and kind of squirrelly, and just so present in that time when they didn’t really know what they were yet, like before they blew up.”
Stewart, who recently directed The Chronology of Water, made it clear that her interest in a Twilight remake is rooted in admiration rather than revisionism. She praised the original filmmakers for imprinting their personalities on the franchise at a time when it was still finding its footing.
Still, she couldn’t help but imagine what a readaptation might look like with fewer constraints and more creative freedom.

“Imagine if we had like, a huge budget and a bunch of love and support,” she said. “I don’t know… I would love to readapt.”
Then, turning decisively toward the camera, Stewart added with a grin: “Yeah, sure, I’ll do the remake. I’m doing it! I’m committed!”
The Twilight saga famously evolved with a rotating roster of directors. Catherine Hardwicke helmed the original Twilight, followed by Chris Weitz (New Moon), David Slade (Eclipse), and Bill Condon, who directed both parts of Breaking Dawn. While the approach brought varied tones to the franchise, it also introduced creative challenges.
Kristen Stewart, who starred as Bella Swan opposite Robert Pattinson’s Edward Cullen, has previously spoken candidly about those difficulties. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she praised Hardwicke’s work on the first film, calling it unmistakably personal.
“That [first] Twilight movie is hers and reflects her; Catherine accomplished that, hands down,” Stewart said. She also admitted she “felt bad” for the directors who followed, noting that the sequels were made within a “really stifled” creative environment.
“Being able to withstand and organize that many opinions, and still make something that feels like yours, is near impossible,” she explained. “With so many voices in the room and with so much expectation, nothing feels personal.”

Despite those constraints, Stewart believes the films still managed to retain a distinct identity. She described the installments as having personality “in spite of a really stifled process,” calling them “almost overtly, bizarrely, spastically themselves.”
That raw creative intensity is something Stewart finds inspiring as both an actor and a director. “You need to have an incredibly thirsty, hungry, brazen, deplorably narrow drive,” she said. “You look at that and you get jealous of it as an actor. So then you go, ‘I’d like to form my own version of that.’”
Stewart isn’t alone in her renewed interest in the Twilight universe. In 2023, Lionsgate revealed it was in the early stages of developing a television adaptation of Meyer’s novels. The author is reportedly involved in the project, though no further details have been released since the announcement.
Whether Stewart’s dream remake ever materializes remains to be seen. But her enthusiasm signals something deeper than nostalgia—a desire to revisit a cultural phenomenon with the confidence, authority, and creative clarity she’s gained over the years.
If the vampire saga ever rises again on the big screen, Kristen Stewart has made one thing clear: she’s ready to lead the rebirth.
